E3 awesomeness

Well, it's that time of year again, and just in case you aren't keeping up and happen to be reading this particular blog, you're in luck! Today you'll find out that there is a new Halo 3: ODST trailer out, showing off new characters, weapons, and a brief shot of a new gameplay mode, Firefight. They didn't say much about that. Anyway, there is also a new Halo game coming out, called...

Halo: Reach! I can't wait for this one. In this, you will, apparently, get to relive the Fall of Reach, the battle just before Halo 1 where all the Spartans (supposedly) died. If Chief and his fellow super-soldiers are Spartans, then this battle is their Thermopylae (like 300, for those who don't know Greek history).

Here's ODST

Here's Reach

Wolverine Double Review - Movie and Game

krakenkiller Posted by krakenkiller at 04:05 PM on May 03, 2009 Comments comments (2)

X-men Origins: Wolverine could be called the prequel to the X-men series, but it focuses, obviously, on the origin story of Wolverine. It tells his story from his childhood, in the 1840s, to when he loses his memory, in the 1970-80s. This essentially tells all the non-comic book readers what they didn't know about Wolverine when they saw the X-men movies. He fights in many wars, including the American Civil War, World War 1, World War 2, and Vietnam, shown in the beginning credit sequence, a good move so that more of the story can be told without lingering on these things. The movie focuses on Wolverine and his time with Weapon X, a top-secret mutant team that does the government's dirty work. When Sabretooth gets claw-happy, Logan decides to leave, but not before we get to see Deadpool (sadly, not in suit) in action for the first time on the big screen. Ryan Reynolds executed his performance quite well, and I only wish he had more screen time. Logan then continues through more adventure, including getting the adamantium bonded to his bones, giving him the signiature indestructible claws. I can't say much more without giving away the story, but I recommend seeing it if you are a comic or Wolverine fan, although they change some things, like Weapon X is not a team project, but Wolverine himself.

The game adaption takes the general storyline from the movie, but takes a great deal of creative lisence, creating foes such as lava monsters. That being said, this is without a doubt, the... best movie lisence game ever made; and for that matter pretty much the best superhero game I've ever played. The action is fairly constant, but it does not get boring. It is not a simple linear hack and slash typical movie hero game. There is a level up system, a great variety of enemies, and when you level up, you unlock more ways to eviscerate your varied foes. The health system is reminiscent of Splatterhouse. You can tell how messed up you are by how much of your body is ruined, but it heals back in real time. The wounds are realistic, and this is also the bloodiest game I've ever played. When I saw the preview, I was worried that it would be underplayed, candy coated. This game is intense. There is exploration, which helps you find health and combat bonuses. I also preordered, unlocking the Weapon X arena, with a ladder challenge (think one-man horde mode), environmental kill room (stick guys on poles and what-not), a room where you can pick any number of enemies you have fought and fight them, and a dismemberment room for the severley disturbed. I cannot express my pleasant surprise and excitement fully here, but this game is a solid 9/10. Finally, a fun, rated-M Wolverine game. IT'S ABOUT TIME.

THIS IS AWESOME!!!

The torrent-download site, The Pirate Bay went to court. The four founders are going to jail for a year, and have to pay $3,600,000 in fines. One of the founders said, of all things, that the verdict was "Epic Win". He said it was "lol to read the verdict". That is awesome. He said it was win because these sorts of sites would never stop. Anyway, here is the full article. Click on the picture, as well. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2345485,00.asp

Watchmen review

Posted by krakenkiller at 08:47 PM on March 25, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Well, I saw this movie opening day, with great expectations. The previews had promised awesome, and I came to see if that's what they had given. The action, story, and effects were not dissapointing. It made some profound statements about society, although they were ridiculing humans for their moral depravity while the movie had plenty of sex scenes and more violence than any war movie I've ever seen, including SPR, Black Hawk Down, and a number of others. Ah, irony. Nonetheless, it was very cool to watch Rorschach beat the crap out of criminals and then some. The major element of fail was that Dr.Manhattan had decided, apparently, that now he was blue, he didn't need pants. Yep. Almost the entire movie had his dick in it. I do not think I will ever see this movie again, despite the amazingly cool parts, which were cool. It wasn't really worth it.

I am : ( because EGM is going out of print (1up was bought by UGO). I know, old news, but I don't have time to get around to everything. Anyway, I read that magazine through picking it up at the stand or at my friend's house, and was seriously considering a subscription. But now, it's all over. They were a great magazine. At least the 1up site is still there.

Halo Wars

krakenkiller Posted by krakenkiller at 09:57 PM on February 14, 2009 Comments comments (3)

The Halo Wars has been available to Gold Members for a while, and was recently released for Silver Members. I have played the demo fairly thoroughly, and I liked it so much I preordered it. I didn't get the LE (limited edition) because the maps didn't seem worth $20, and the other stuff wasn't enough to justify the cost. Otherwise, I expect a lot from this game.

Also, it broke records for the most downloaded XBL demo in 24 hrs.

Lord of The Rings: Conquest Review

Pfc.Eisenhower Posted by Pfc.Eisenhower at 08:57 AM on January 24, 2009 Comments comments (0)

One of the things that we talk about here is video games. In particular, I wanted to talk about the new game LOTR: Conquest. Being that it was a game made by Pandemic (the creators of Star Wars: Battlefront) I thought that the game would worth a try, plus, the online trial made the game seem like it would turn out to be pretty good. I bought the game and after playing the campaign for a while, I found that I had been lied to. It seemed that the demo created unecessary hype that (to say the least) didn't live up to its standards. Allow me to begin to begin this tale of fail. The Good campaign consisted of very general battles, such as: Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith, Osgiliath, the Pelennor Fields, and the Black Gate (there are other maps, but these are the major maps). The battles do not give any feeling that you are fighting in an epic battle, but more like petty skirmishes with multiple annoying inconveniences that the developers seemed to  purposefully put in. For instance, the game's warrior class units that you face in the game are hopelessly annoying. They seem to block every melee attack in the game minus one special attack that uses a lot of your character's energy (which is necessary for doing these special attacks). Plus, half of the time, you are being ceaselessly knocked to the ground by enemys' attacks that you barley have a fighting chance against large numbers of units.

Another thing that really makes this game anything from perfect is its tendency for imbalanced units. For the most part, the units and heroes are fairly balanced, but some have certain advantages that I think should have been evened out properly. For instance, I think that the scout's ability to sneak behind pretty much any unit and insta-kill it with one move is fairly cheap. But one thing that annoyed me more than any of this is the simple fact that every enemy has this innate instinct to kill one person. You. Without fail, if you are faced by any unit, within a certain range(which is probably like 200ft., since enemies across that map seemed to be solely attracted to your character) will ignore fighting any enemy except for you. This is especially true of enemy heroes. They'll pursue you with eternal vengence until you have been killed. Also, There are only a few factions that you get to play as in the entire campaign. You only play as men/elves vs. orcs/Uruk-hai. What about Dwarves? What about Goblins? That would add an extra element to the game that would be worth adding, but apparently not.

Overlooking these flaws, there are some good elements to this game. The instant action and multiplayer are pretty much it. The Evil campaign was okay, but last mission, the ransacking of the Shire, was almost more entertaining than it should have been. Afterall, think about it. You're practically killing innocent children (as you would expect, the Hobbit units are just blade fodder) aside from the ents and Gondorian captians that you fight there. Overall, I would say that you should wait for a drop in price before buying one. I would give this game 6 or 5 out of 10. But ultimatley, I think that making a Battlefront 3 is much needed to make up for this game.
